How It Started

There are many versions as to how this may have started.

A caffè sospeso , Italian for pending coffee, is a cup of coffee paid for in advance as an anonymous act of charity. The tradition began in the working-class coffee shops of Naples,  where someone who had experienced good luck would order a sospeso, paying the price of two coffees but receiving and consuming only one. A person who could not afford a coffee would inquire later if there was a sospeso available.  If available, they would receive the coffee at no charge.   Coffee shops in other countries have adopted the sospeso to increase sales.

As reported by an organization called Suspended Coffees,  in the spring of 2013, a gentleman from Ireland read about a similar tradition.  He felt that he could use the suspended coffee concept to make a difference in the world.  With that thought in mind, he started a Facebook page called Suspended Coffees to see if there was any interest.  There was positive response from around the world - which was certainly encouraging.  Within 8 weeks, Suspended Coffees generated 60,000 fans.  We happened upon Suspended Coffees while looking for a way to help others in our own community. It is with that same "do unto others" spirit that SUSPENDED COFFEE DECATUR was born.

Although fairly new to the USA, our hope is that Suspended Coffee Decatur can do the same in our community as Suspended Coffees has done in Ireland and as other "Suspended" groups are doing around the world.
